A human brain has been found in a mail truck attempting to get to the United States from Canada.

US Customs officers made the unusual discovery during a spot check on a mail truck on February 14.

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) told BBC the brain was found at Bluewater crossing between the province of Ontario and Michigan, US.

"Upon opening the shipment, CBP officers found the package to contain a human brain specimen inside of a clear glass mason jar without any paperwork or documentation in support of its lawful entry into the United States," the agency said in a statement.

The brain was stored inside a jar marked "antique teaching specimen" and was destined for Kenosha, Wisconsin.

It is not known what the brain was going to be used for as it didn't come with any paperwork.

CBP spokesman Kris Grogan was reported by The Star that he had seen many weird items during his career.

"It is a very unique case to open up a package with absolutely no documentation or anything and to find out that it’s a brain.

"But I will say, nothing surprises us anymore on some of the things that we do find."

He said the organ has been put into quarantine and isn't yet sure what will happen to it.

In December 2019 it was reported New Zealand biosecurity had found dried deer testicles, a live cat and roadkill trying to be transported through our borders.
