An elderly man was beaten while walking to the shops in the UK despite telling the culprit he had "nothing in his pockets" to give him.

On Wednesday (local time), the 71-year-old man was walking to a block of shops in Croydon when the alleged attacker approached him, the Evening Standard reports.

The elderly man said he had nothing to give him. However, instead of leaving him alone, the attacker kicked him in the back from behind.

According to the Evening Standard, the victim was left lying on the floor. Police said the culprit reportedly had a "scruffy" beard, is about 30-years-old and of Asian descent.

Enquiries are ongoing to locate the attacker.
