Members of a conservation group are in mourning after four rare mountain gorillas were killed by a lightning strike in Uganda.

Conservation group The Greater Virunga Transboundary Collaboration (GVTC) says a male baby and three females - including one who was pregnant, died in the strike, the BBC reports.

While these gorillas died, 13 others in the group survived.

"This was extremely sad," said GVTC executive director Dr Andrew Seguya.

"The potential of the three females for their contribution to the population was immense," Dr Seguya told the BBC.

According to WWF, mountain gorillas are endangered but conservation efforts have seen an increase in population numbers.

About 1000 of them remain, National Geographic says, with about half of those located in central Africa.
