Homophobic US voter asks for vote back after realising her chosen candidate is a gay man

A US voter in Iowa was so horrified her chosen candidate was gay that she asked to have her ballot back.

The woman was filmed on Tuesday responding to the knowledge after voting for Democratic candidate Pete Buttigieg.

The woman had voted for Buttigieg in the Iowa caucus, which is the first step for Democratic candidates to become their party's choice for president.

But the idea of a homosexual president shocked the woman.

"Are you saying he has the same-sex partner? Pete?" she asks.

"Yes," replied Buttigieg supporter Nikki van den Heever.

"He's married to him."

The voter looks shocked at the revelation.

"Then I don't want anybody like that in the White House, so can I have my card back?"

Van den Heever said she wasn't sure if the votes worked like that, because the woman had already signed her ballot and then added Buttigieg's sexuality shouldn't matter.

"He's a human being right? Just like you and me, and it really shouldn't matter."

The voter was unconvinced, retorting "well he'd better read the bible."

Buttigieg has been open about his strong Christian faith, says van den Heever.

"He says that God doesn't choose a political party," she told the angry voter.

"How come this has never been brought out before?" the voter asks, bewildered.

Buttigieg has been open about his sexuality, marriage to husband Chasten Buttigieg and strong Christian faith.

"It's common knowledge, "replied van deer Heever.

The misinformed voter was allowed to undo her vote for Buttigieg and switch her support to Senator Elizabeth Warren, reports CNBC.

The democratic chair of Howard County, Iowa Lauren Hubka told CNBC said she was "very proud" of how van den Heever handled the uncomfortable situation.

"[She is] a wonderful example of Cresco Iowa. I thank her with my whole heart," Hubka wrote in a Tweet.
