The body of a US six-year-old who went missing from her South Carolina home on Monday has been found.

Chief Byron Snellgrove of the Cayce Department of Public Safety said the body of Faye Swetlik was discovered on Thursday.

"It is with extremely heavy hearts that we are announcing that we found a body that the coroner has identified as Faye Marie Swetlik," said Chief Snellgrove.

Swetlik safely arrived from the school bus on Monday and was last witnessed playing on her family's front yard in Cayce.

Her parents became suspicious of her absence at 3:45 and called police at 5pm, reported CNN.

Police found the body in Churchill Heights and are treating the incident as a homicide.

A "deceased male" was also found near Swetlik's body.

According to ABC News Swetlik's death was "linked" to a 30-year-old male neighbour identified as Coty Scott Taylor.

"I can confirm that he was a neighbour, that he was not a relative, he was not a friend. He was merely a neighbour," Cayce Sergeant Evan Antley told media.

He added, at this time police have no reasons to believe there is an active threat.
