It is understood the world's richest man Jeff Bezos is in New Zealand.

A private jet belonging to the Amazon chief executive is sitting on the tarmac at Wellington airport.

The Gulfstream 650ER, valued at NZD$102 million, was spotted in the capital on Thursday afternoon - but those in the film industry are remaining tight-lipped about whether the billionaire is here.

His company Amazon is developing a Lord of the Rings Series that will be filmed in New Zealand.

Amazon's New Zealand-based agents did not immediately respond to Newshub's request for comment.

Worth more than NZ$200 billion, Bezos would be the richest person to ever set foot in the country.

He owns two of the aircraft seen in Wellington.
