Shocking footage shows aftermath of Brisbane stabbing

Footage of the horrifying aftermath of a stabbing in central Brisbane has surfaced online.

The video provided to 7 News shows the 24-year-old suspect lying dead in the middle of the road after being shot by police.

The alleged attacker was killed on Mary Street outside the Westin Hotel on Sunday after punching a 26-year-old man in the face and stabbing him in the back.

The man suffered a broken nose and split lip, as well as a small stab wound in his back. He was taken to hospital but has since been released.

Police were called to the scene around 10am and repeatedly asked the knife-wielding man to put down his weapon.

It's alleged he charged at officers prompting them to open fire.

Tourists told 7 News they heard around five or six shots fired. The alleged knifeman died at the scene.

"We thought they were saying 'put the knife down' that's what we were hearing, shouting cause it was really loud," Joe Saks told the network.

"I came outside and I saw someone lying on the ground and [police] were performing CPR," another witness told AAP.

The incident will be investigated by the Ethical Standards Command on behalf of the Coroner.

Officials say he was known to police and most likely acted alone.
