'This is hideous': Reporter's personal connection to alleged drunk driving tragedy

The AM Show's Australia correspondent has described the devastation an alleged drunk driving crash has had on a local community.

Four children were killed in Sydney on Saturday night in an alleged drink driving accident.

The driver - reportedly three times above the legal drink-drive limit - ploughed into a group of seven children in Oatlands, near Parramatta.

Siblings Antony, 13, Angelina, 12 and Sienna Abdallah, 9 were killed in the crash, along with their cousin Veronique Sakr, 11.

The father of three of the children killed, Danny Abdullah, told reporters he felt "numb" after the incident.

Australia correspondent Jason Morrison says he knows Abdullah and his family. He said the situation is "hideous".

Morrison said although he knew of the situation soon after it happened, he initially had no idea of his personal connection with the victims.

"I was very well aware of what was happening out at the scene, we had reporters there on Saturday night bringing the latest information into us," he told The AM Show on Monday.

"Then the penny dropped. I figured out who the family was and where they were from and very quickly the connection that my kids have with them - my sons go to school with this family, we know them very, very well."

The alleged drunk driver appeared in court on Sunday and was denied bail. Among the charges he faces are four counts of manslaughter, four counts of dangerous driving occasioning death as well as grievous bodily harm, drink driving, and driving through a red traffic light.

"This family is destroyed by this. Last night the mother and relatives were seen at the scene of the crash kneeling in prayer...where 18 hours earlier their son, their little girls, were killed," Morrison said.

"They live at the top of the street and around the corner from the street where they were killed all their little school mates today were walking to school into what will be a heartbroken community.

"It is the most - they say unimaginable, I can't even think of a word really - It's just bloody awful."

The 29-year-old charged with the deaths will next appear in court on April 2.
