An eight-year-old boy isolated at Gold Coast University Hospital was diagnosed with coronavirus on Tuesday night, marking Queensland's third case of the deadly virus.

Queensland Health chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young confirmed the boy was a Chinese national from Wuhan in the Hubei province, which is the epicentre of the virus.

The child was travelling with a 44-year-old man and 42-year-old woman, who were both diagnosed with coronavirus in Queensland last week.

All three remain in a stable condition at the Gold Coast University Hospital.

Thirteen cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Australia and more than 400 people

have been screened for the virus at Brisbane International Airport since Sunday.

Queensland Health Minister Steven Miles is pushing to extend his existing health emergency order from one week to three months.

If passed, the bill introduced into state parliament on Tuesday would allow health officers more time to quarantine people suspected of having coronavirus.

Close to 25,000 cases of the deadly virus have been reported worldwide and the death toll in mainland China reached 490 as of Wednesday.
