A New South Wales mum was given a fright when she found a snake in a bag of potatoes she had just bought from her local supermarket.

Marissa Davidson bought the 4kg bag from a Woolworths in Coffs Harbour on March 6 and was about to cook dinner for her five-year-old son Chase.

"I opened it and I grabbed two potatoes out, and I was like, 'Oh no, I'll do three' and turned around to get the other one and (the snake) jumped out," she told nine.com.au.

She said she had to quickly get over her fright when the snake started towards Chase, who has a congenital heart defect and has had three surgeries.

"He has got hypoplastic left heart syndrome, which is half a heart, and it could have made him very sick."

She quickly grabbed a laundry basket to trap the snake but when it began attacking the basket she ended up killing it.

"I grabbed my son then ran and got my vacuum pole and smashed it's head off," she told the Daily Mail. "It was attacking the laundry basket, viciously attacking it."

Davidson said she and her son were still shaken up by the "terrifying" experience and are struggling to sleep.

She said she had contacted Woolworths and provided photos of the snake and was disappointed when they didn't offer her a refund.

"They have asked for some other photos. I have still got the snake. I ended up freezing it and I said if you want the snake I can post it to you because they are wanting more evidence to identify it."

Woolworths said they are investigating the incident.
