A 14-year-old from Portugal with no major health issues is believed to be Europe's youngest COVID-19 victim.

Vitor Godinho died in the early hours of Sunday morning after being rushed to Sao Sebastiao Hospital north of Porto.

While he did not have any major underlying health conditions, it is believed he suffered from the skin disorder psoriasis which can affect the immune system.

Metro UK reports medics decided against transferring him to a hospital with a pediatric A&E unit due to the severity of his condition upon arrival.

He was described as "healthy" by members of his family and was an amateur futsal player.

Godinho played the sport, which is a variation of football, for the Maceda Cultural and Recreational Centre in his home town of Aveiro.

His team said in a statement: "This time you didn't get past the rival, like you did so many times. We're devastated, lost for words. Rest in peace champion".

Portuguese Football Federation president Fernando Gomes paid tribute to Godinho with a message posted on their website.

"With profound consternation, I am sending my condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Vitor Rafael Bastos Godinho," he said.

"At this moment of deep pain for his loved ones, I am also sending words of comfort to the footballing family in the Aveiro region who share with us the disappearance of such a precocious talent."

Godinho's death follows that of French schoolgirl Julie Alliot, 16, who died at a Paris hospital on Wednesday.

She was previously Europe's youngest COVID-19 death, Metro UK reports, and also had no underlying health conditions.

Portugal currently has 5962 cases of COVID-19 with 119 deaths and 43 recoveries.
