Gloria Gaynor has initiated a new viral challenge to encourage fans to practice good hygiene amid the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak.

The famous disco-era singer, 70, posted to her TikTok on Thursday and started the #IWillSurvive challenge, where participants sing along to her well-known song 'I Will Survive' while cleaning their hands.

The challenge aims to get more people washing their hands for over 20 seconds as per the World Health Organization's guidelines.

Washing hands thoroughly and avoiding touching your face are considered the two most effective ways to protect individuals against coronavirus.

The video has been reposted to her other social media accounts and has received over 120,000 views on Instagram.

"It only takes 20 seconds to 'SURVIVE!'" she captioned the video.

Before the video, some people had been singing Happy Birthday twice while washing.

Gaynor has now posted more videos to her Instagram of other people taking part in the challenge and she thanked Billboard for supporting the movement and helping to educate the public.

Commenters on Twitter have been praising the singer for encouraging her fans to practice good hygiene amongst the coronavirus outbreak.

One person said that Gaynor "has now done more for the health and welfare of the United States than the president".

Another commenter said "This brings joy in the midst of our current challenges. Gloria Gaynor singing 'I will survive' while washing her hands. Try it!"

There are currently over 145,000 cases of coronavirus worldwide. 70,000 of these cases have recovered and 5400 have died.
