Up to 40 London underground train stations are expected to close as the city scrambles to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Nine stations are currently closed but from Friday the Waterloo and City line will shut down completely, reports the BBC.

Trains will no longer run all night and other parts of the network such as the London Overground will be run at reduced capacity.

The closure comes as the British capital attempts to slow the spread of the deadly virus.

The UK currently has 2644 confirmed cases of coronavirus - more than 900 of which are in London, reports the BBC.

Seventy-two people have died according to a case tracker operated by Johns Hopkins University of Medicine.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, stressed residents must avoid public transport wherever possible.

"People should not be travelling, by any means, unless they really, really have to. Londoners should be avoiding social interaction unless absolutely necessary, and that means they should be avoiding using the transport network unless absolutely necessary," he said.

"I'm urging Londoners to only use public transport for essential journeys. Everyone should follow this and the other advice to help keep themselves and each other safe."
