Person reportedly tests positive for COVID-19 in India after leaving New Zealand

A state in India has entered lockdown after three people tested positive for COVID-19 with one person reportedly coming from New Zealand.

The 65-year-old patient had travelled to New Zealand before returning to Tamil Nadu in the south of India. 

It is unclear if they are a New Zealand national or not. 

Tamil Nadu's health minister Dr C Vijayabaskar posted a Tweet on Thursday confirming the background of the state's three new cases.

The other two positive cases were Thail Nationals. Vijayabaskar confirmed all three are being treated in isolation.

A spokesperson from New Zealand's Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Trade told Newshub the High Commission in New Delhi is providing consular assistance to "a number" of New Zealander's affected by COVID-19.

"For privacy reasons we do not discuss individual cases."

The new cases bring Tamil Nadu's total cases to six. The state has closed all major temples and churches have been asked to avoid large gatherings. Buses and trains have also been reduced, reports Times of India.

India as a whole has 330 cases and four deaths according to a tracker operated by Johns Hopkins University.
