As it happened: US Election Super Tuesday results come in

Results are coming in as booths begin to close across the 14 states voting in the Super Tuesday Democrats' race for the White House.

Super Tuesday is the biggest voting day for Democrats as they choose their nominee to take on President Donald Trump. A candidate needs to gain 1991 delegates to become the nominee. These are handed out upon the proportion of the vote the candidate receives, as long as they gain more than 15 percent of the vote.

There are 1357 delegates available across the 14 states voting on Super Tuesday (Wednesday in New Zealand).

The winner won't be known tonight but the results will be a good indicator of who the front runner will be.

The Guardian estimates that 81 percent of the votes are in, but it's a tight race between Biden and Sanders.

Biden is currently sitting on 62,464 votes, or 33.8 percent. Sanders has 59,363 votes, or 32.3 percent.

8:23pm - While we wait for Maine's results to be declared, here's some background on primaries, the delegate counts and how candidates secure the nomination.

All 50 US states plus Washington DC and US territories vote in a series of primaries and caucuses. The main goal for candidates is to gain the most amount of votes which translates to a number of pledged delegates.

A candidate needs 1991 pledged delegates to be the Democratic nominee. If no candidates reach this by the Democrat Party's convention in July, it's called a contested or brokered convention.

If that happens, the nominee is chosen through a voting system that involves unpledged delegates - or 'superdelegates' - and they vote their conscience.

The nominee will then face Trump in the election on November 3.

8:15pm - The last state left to declare a winner is Maine.

Currently, about 91 percent of the votes have been counted and Biden has a small 1.5 point lead over Sanders.

Although polls closed at 10pm (local time), people who were in line before 8pm were allowed to cast their vote.

7:27pm - Biden is currently leading the popular vote, ABC reports.
