Captain Tom Moore scores UK number one single after raising over £26 million for healthcare workers

The UK veteran who raised millions of pounds for healthcare workers can now add a number one single to his list of achievements.

Captain Tom Moore initially aimed to raise £1000 ($2072) for the National Health Service (NHS) and walk 100 lengths of his garden at his Bedfordshire home before turning 100 on April 30.

The World War Two veteran has now collaborated with singer and actor Michael Ball and The NHS Voices of Care Choir on the song 'You'll Never Walk Alone', which topped the country's Official Big Top 40 chart on Sunday (local time).

Alongside his Givealittle page - which has received over £26.3 million ($54.4 million) in donations - proceeds from the song will also go towards the NHS, according to the BBC.

In a video clip on Ball's Twitter page, all the choir members, Moore and Ball are seen recording their part of the song in their homes while appearing on a video conference.

Host of the Official Big Top 40 radio show Will Manning spoke to Moore's daughter and grandson, who say they were overwhelmed when they found out the news.

"[It's] beyond even comprehension," his daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore says. "Thank you for supporting us all and thank you to the British public - we really appreciate it."

His grandson Benji, 16, says his grandad is someone who "takes everything in his stride".

"He won't brag about it at all, he's probably one of the most humble men you'll ever meet in your life. But I think quietly he's really loving it."

Moore told the BBC last week he was amazed at the public's support for his Givealittle fundraiser.

"When we started off with this exercise we didn't anticipate we'd get anything near that sort of money. It's really amazing," he says.

"All of them, from top to bottom, in the National Health Service, they deserve everything that we can possibly put in their place. They're all so brave."

He completed the 100th lap of his garden live on television on Thursday morning (local time), but will continue to walk to raise money for the "NHS heroes".

A Spitfire flypast is also reportedly being planned to mark Moore's 100th birthday later this month.
