A Brazilian mother who earlier confessed to poisoning her 11-year-old son has now instead been accused of strangling him to death.

Alexandra Dougokenski allegedly strangled her son Rafael and dumped his body in an abandoned house earlier this month.

The woman then reported him missing before police found the body earlier this week. She then confessed to poisoning him, although a Legal Medical Institute Report later suggested he died by choking. It's unclear why she told police she'd poisoned him.

On Wednesday, a report by local news site R7 said Rafael's neck was also wrapped with a rope when it was located.

An emotional Rodrigo Vinques, Rafael's father, said he was unaware of any violence committed against the boy prior to the murder.

"We will wait for justice to be served," he told R7.

Dougokenski has been remanded in custody as the police continue to investigate.
