An American couple arrested in relation to a stabbing have been ridiculed online for their "epic", "crazy clown" mugshots.

Donald Eugene Lory Jr, 54, and Julia Crystal Cavaliere, 41, were taken into custody on Wednesday (US Time) after a five-hour standoff in Asheville, North Carolina.

The Asheville Police Department said they received a report of a stabbing in an apartment block at 3:40am.

"Upon arrival officers located a victim suffering from life-threatening injuries as a result of stab wounds," they said in a Facebook post.

"The victim was transported to Mission Hospital for treatment. They are currently in critical condition."

Lory was found barricaded in one of the apartments with Cavaliere and a Crisis Negotiation team was brought in to bring him out "without further incident".

At around 9am they surrendered to police and were taken into custody.

After announcing the arrest on their Facebook page, the Police added old mugshots of the pair that captured the internet's attention.

"This mug shot is EPIC," one commenter wrote.

"I promise not everyone in North Carolina is crazy like this!" another said.

Another tweeted: "I know Asheville has their share of weirdos but, day-yum".

Commenters pondered whether the ink on Cavaliere's face, in a shape similar to clown makeup, is a permanent tattoo or an unfortunate pen incident.

"Damn the pandemic has been rough on the Joker and the Riddler."

Lory was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and inflict serious injury, and Cavaliere was charged with resist, delay, obstruct.
