US man allegedly murdered by son while on Zoom call

A 32-year-old US man has been arrested and charged with stabbing his father to death on a Zoom call with 20 people.

Dwight Powers, 72, was on the call in his home in Amityville New York when his son Thomas Scully Powers attacked him.

The attack occurred shortly after noon on Thursday, and police say some participants on the call witnessed Dwight being killed.

"They just noticed him fall off the screen and then they heard heavy breathing," Detective Lt Kevin Beyrer of the Suffolk County police homicide squad told Newsday. "It was horrible that they had to witness this."

After several people on the call notified police, Scully Powers was arrested in less than an hour - he was found injured from jumping out a second floor window, and taken to hospital.

Police told Newsday it took longer to find the address as participants in the call did not know where Powers lived.

Scully Powers has been charged with second-degree murder and willl be arraigned when he is released from hospital.
