A violent arrest of an Aboriginal man in Australia has caused outrage after he was repeatedly tasered in the face, chest and neck at close range.

Kris Lovelock was cornered in a garden by police on Monday after a foot pursuit through Sydney's Darlinghurst suburb.

The officers repeatedly order him to get on the ground, while pointing a taser at him.

They then pull Lovelock forward by his jumper and taser him multiple times at close range.

"Why are you f***ing doing that?" Lovelock can be heard screaming.

He had to receive treatment at St Vincent's Hospital, police said.

The video has drawn outrage given the recent worldwide protests against racism and police brutality.

Lovelock's girlfriend Sivan Dovale told 9News she found out about his arrest after seeing the footage circulating on social media.

"I felt heartbroken," she said. "I hate Australian police now, I don't feel like I can trust them at all… These are the people that are meant to help us and look what they are doing to us."

New South Wales police said officers "were conducting proactive patrols when they noticed a man and a woman walking on Oxford Street".

"Police commenced a foot pursuit which continued through several streets, including a house in Darlinghurst.

"Shortly after, the man was located in a common garden area at the back of units on Rose Terrace, near South Dowling Street. As police attempted to arrest him, a taser was deployed."

They also located a bag of allegedly stolen goods.
