An Australian man has been sentenced to 10 months in prison for threatening to kill New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

ABC Australia reports Cormac Patrick Rothsey posted to Facebook in August, with one post containing an image of Ardern and captioned "she should be put down like an animal".

At sentencing on Friday, the Newcastle District Court heard he also made comments that Muslims shouldn't be in Australia and that he wanted Muslims to die.

Rothsey pleaded guilty in September, the ABC reports.

Judge Tim Gartelmann sentenced Rothsey to 10 months behind bars on Friday. He will have to receive mental health treatment upon his release.
