US President Donald Trump is in a spat with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio over a proposed 'Black Lives Matter' mural due to be painted in front of Trump Tower.

The words 'Black Lives Matter' will be painted between 56th and 57th streets in Manhatten in block yellow letters.

Trump tweeted that de Blasio "wants to paint the fabled and beautiful Fifth Avenue, right in front of Trump Tower/Tiffany, with a big yellow Black Lives Matter sign. Pigs in a Blanket, Fry 'Em Like Bacon", referring to killing police, is their chant. NYC Police are furious!"

De Blasio responded with "only warped minds equate the word Black Lives Matter with violence."

"It's a movement to recognise and protect the lives of Black people. Nobody's surprised that makes you uncomfortable."

"This city's doing the real work of healing the right between police and community - because unlike you we're not afraid of doing the work."

"The president is a disgrace to the values we cherish in New York City," de Blasio's spokesperson Julia Arredondo said, in Sky News reports.

"He can't run or deny the reality we are facing, and any time he wants to set foot in the place he claims is his hometown, he should be reminded Black Lives Matter."

Work is scheduled to begin on the mural next week.
