A Canadian politician has recommended its Government allow US residents not happy with Donald Trump's leadership to seek refuge north of the border.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday (local time), Green Party Parliamentary leader Elizabeth May addressed the ongoing protests in the US over the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died after a police officer knelt on his neck during an arrest for nine minutes.

"It's clear that if you're Muslim, if you're black, if you're Latina, if you're Indigenous, the United States is not a safe country," May said, as reported by the Western Standard.

She added the Canadian Government needed to allow US citizens to seek asylum and move to Canada.

May said the US was "no longer safe" because of Trump, the Huffington Post reports.

"I just knew I could not stay silent as the president of the United States urged violence and in coded language has been giving - oxygen, for years now, to white supremacists.

"So I once again call on the Prime Minister and the Minister of Iimmigration and the Minister of Foreign Affairs to explain that under the circumstances in this pandemic, as long as people who come across our border meet our COVID-19 public safety rules, we must not turn them away."

Some Twitter users, however, have criticised her stance.

"This is downright insulting to actual refugees, who were ravaged by war and famine," one said.

"Ok no we can't accept half the population of America," another wrote.

At least 14 people have died in the protests across the US so far.
