Madeleine McCann case: Sky News sorry for showing Prince Andrew instead of Christian B in report

Sky News has apologised after broadcasting footage of Prince Andrew during a report on the suspect in the Madeleine McCann case.

On Tuesday (NZT), Sky News host Dermot Murnaghan provided an update on the day's "top story".

"We have actual evidence Madeleine McCann is dead. German prosecutors reveal more on their investigation into the suspect, Christian B," he told viewers in a voiceover.

However, at the same time the broadcaster showed footage of embattled Prince Andrew, who has recently been in the news for a tit-for-tat with the United States Department of Justice over his cooperation in the Jeffrey Epstein investigation.

A stern-looking Prince Andrew could be seen speaking to someone with their back to the camera.

Murnaghan later apologised on behalf of Sky News for the mix-up.

"Now in the headlines at the start of this hour, we featured headlines in the wrong order.

"We included a picture of Prince Andrew in the headline about the investigation into Christian B, the German suspect in the Madeleine McCann.

"We apologise for this mistake."

McCann's disappearance returned to global headlines last week after British and German authorities appealed for information about a new suspect. The German man, said to be named Christian Brueckner, is currently imprisoned for a sex crime. He has also reportedly been linked to other missing person cases in Germany and Portugal.

While the Metropolitan Police are treating the investigation as a missing persons case, German authorities believe the child, who disappeared from the Portugal town of Praia da Luz in 2007, is dead.

Hans Christian Wolter, from the Braunschweig public prosecutor's office, told Sky News it had evidence the child was no longer alive, but not enough to take the suspect to trial.

"We got things we cannot communicate that speak for the theory that Madeleine is dead, even if I have to admit that we don't have the body."

Images of two vehicles owned by the suspect and two phone numbers linked to him were released by police last week.
