A set of Mexican triplets have been born with coronavirus.

The two boys and one girl tested positive for the virus on the day they were born.

According to 7 News, one of the babies has symptoms of COVID-19 and the other two are asymptomatic.

Medical experts are looking into whether the triplets could have caught the virus through the mother's placenta during pregnancy.

CBS News reports the triplets mother was also positive but asymptomatic, when the triplets were born.

San Luis Potosi health secretary, Monica Rangel, said the triplets were not thought to be in danger and it was being investigated to see whether they were infected before or after birth.

She said it was unlikely the triplets could have been infected outside the womb so quickly, CBS reported.

This is not the first the newborns have tested positive for COVID-19, however it is uncommon.

Mexico has reported 185,122 confirmed cases of the virus and 22,584 deaths as of Wednesday (NZ time).
