The World Health Organization has reported a record increase in global coronavirus cases on Sunday.

The total rose by 183,020 in a 24-hour period surpassing the previous record of 181,232 on June 18.

This now brings the total confirmed cases worldwide to 8.7 million and there 461,702 people have died from the virus.

On Sunday Brazil had the most new cases of any country at 54,771.

This was followed by the United States with 36,617 and India the third highest with 15,400.

However Brazil and India's surge in cases was due to data collection issues.

"A large increase observed on this day [in Brazil] was in part due to a lag in reporting from three states (Bahia, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo), compounding data from two days," WHO reported.

"Local authorities [in India also] confirmed that the significant increase of deaths reported earlier this week was due to a backlog in data reporting from Delhi and Mumbai."

Last week WHO warned the world was entering "a new and dangerous phase" as stay-at-home orders are being lifted

Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also said the pandemic is "accelerating".

Tedros, whose leadership of the WHO has been severely criticised by US President Donald Trump, urged people to maintain social distancing and "extreme vigilance."
