UK essential retail opens to a roaring trade after being closed for three months

For the first time in three months, Brits have been able to indulge in some retail therapy - but only in England, and only at certain shops.

Shoppers say they are happy to be getting back to some normality.

"I've missed it so much," one told Newshub.

"I was so happy, literally I was like we have to get here so fast," another said.

Only essential retail was allowed to reopen with barbers, salons, pubs, and eat-in restaurants remaining closed.

Those stores which could open their doors had people limits, one-way systems, safety screens, sanitiser, and social distancing protocols in place for safety.

But despite the changes, retail manager Sarah Hastings said the day was exciting.

"I must admit I struggled to go to sleep because I was just so excited to be back to the new normal."

Businesses are hoping it means they'll be back to profitability too.

"Customers have obviously missed coming out to stores and shops, we can see that from the demand, people patiently waiting to come in," says chain store manager Mark Allsop.

"So we should be optimistic and excited about the future of the high street."

It's a contrast to mainland Europe, where not only the shops are open, but many borders are too.

Germany, France, and Switzerland are now allowing people to freely travel between the three nations.

The Spanish island of Mallorca is also relaxing its restrictions, with German holidaymakers now able to use the pool and get some sun.  Face masks only required at the bar.

In Greece, the airports are open and the museums are too as tourism is vital to their economy.

Even if it's just a trickle at the moment with masks and head shields the new face of ancient Greece.
