UK police officers attacked as bystander takes a selfie in 'shocking' incident

Four UK residents, including a 13-year-old boy, have been arrested after two police officers were attacked as bystanders danced and took selfies of the "shocking" incident.

The attack unfolded in the London district of Hackney on Wednesday afternoon (local time), according to local media.

It quickly turned nasty, with footage posted to social media appearing to show one of the officers being kicked on the ground. They were reportedly responding to reports of an assault in the area.

Thankfully, a witness rushed to the scene with a baseball bat to break up the brawl, and the officers escaped with just minor injuries.

Hackney Police, which also shared a video of the incident to its Twitter page, said it was a "truly despicable" act.

The BBC reports that four men - aged 34, 32, 20, and a 13-year-old boy have since been detained for allegedly assaulting police.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

"Yet again this starkly shows the dangers [officers] face and the bravery they show each and every day keeping Londoners safe," said Metropolitan Police Federation chairman Ken Marsh.

"We are not society's punch bags," Marsh said, as reported by the BBC.

UK Home Secretary Priti Patel said on Twitter any assaults on police officers are "completely unacceptable".

"Perpetrators should be in no doubt that they will face the full force of the law," she said, adding the attack was "sickening, shocking, and disgraceful".
