A police officer has been suspended without pay after an alleged "chokehold incident" in Queens, New York.

A video of the incident shows a man being held on the ground by four police officers with one enforcing an apparent chokehold, until one of the officers taps him on the back to tell him to lay off.

New York Police Commissioner Dermot Shea believed suspension was the required action.

"While a full investigation is still underway, there is no question in my mind that this immediate action is necessary," Shea said.

Police were called to the incident on Sunday after reports of a man harassing people on the beach and throwing things at them.

Once police arrived, they were harassed by a group of three men taunting them for about 10 minutes.

After a couple of warnings, police moved in to arrest one of the men. CNN reports the altercation was filmed on police body cameras.

The New York Police Department released a statement saying: "We are aware of the video and there is an active investigation underway by the Internal Affairs Bureau. This matter is taken extremely seriously and we expect to have an update this evening as the investigation unfolds."
