The daughter of a US Republican politician has publicly condemned her father's beliefs and is urging people not to vote for him.

On Wednesday Stephanie Regan shared her thoughts about her father Robert Regan who is running for Michigan's House of Representatives.

"If you're in Michigan and 18+ pls for the love of god do not vote for my dad for state rep. Tell everyone," she said in a tweet which now has over 175,000 likes.

"Do a quick [Facebook] or google search to find info about his campaign. I don't feel safe right now sharing further information regarding his beliefs, but please look him up and just read for yourself."

"Sorry lol blood is not thicker than water."

Robert is known for his very conservative Christian views and his campaign positions include pro-life, pro- the right to keep & bear arms, and opposing the legalisation of euthanasia.

In an interview on Thursday, Robert said his daughter's opposition to his candidacy was unsurprising, and "implied she had been brainwashed at university", the Hill reported.

"A lot of students when they go off to these liberal university campuses, like the University of Colorado, the University of Texas and Austin — and she went to the University of Colorado in Boulder — and you know, they just kind of get sucked into this Marxist, communist ideology and she and I just don't see eye to eye when it comes to the whole socialism, communism, Marxist philosophy," he said.

He told the Hill that "her big thing has to do with the systemic racism," an idea he also said "I don't buy into" at all.

"I'm not saying there's not hurdles to overcome. We all have hurdles to overcome. You know, as a quote-unquote rich, white, Christian male, people look at me a certain way. And it's not always good. So, everybody has obstacles to overcome."

He said he hasn't spoken with Stephanie since her tweets but was "happy that she’s willing to speak out and express her opinion on things."

In a follow up tweet Stephanie said she hadn't expected her tweet to go viral, "I didn't think anyone past hometown friends would see this," she said.

"Thank you everyone offering support and love! My dms and notifs are crazy, it's hard to reply but please know I appreciate you!!!!"
