Australian woman Sara Connor has been released from prison in Indonesia after serving four years over the death of a Bali police officer.

Connor, a 49-year-old mother of two, and her boyfriend David Taylor were convicted of group assault of Wayan Sudarsa, who was found dead on a Bali beach with 42 wounds in August 2016.

On Thursday she was released from Kerobokan Prison four years into her five-year sentence due to good behaviour, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Connor's representative Tora Solutions said she had been placed into the custody of Indonesian immigration.

"Ms Connor is still waiting to be issued with travel documents, which were requested 91 days ago from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Upon receipt of these documents, Ms Connor will be repatriated," they said in a statement.

"Ms Connor again expresses the utmost sympathy for Mr Sudarsa's family."

Kerobokan women's prison governor Lili said when Connor first came to the jail she had been very emotional.

"Now she has changed a lot, for the better. In the beginning, her emotions would run high, we slowly approached her by involving her in many prison activities," she said. "Religious activities, painting classes, hairdressing, knitting, any prison activities she would join. Now she has become someone the other prisoners look up to. She has come a long way."

Lili said Connor was excited to be reunited with her family again.

During the four-month trial in 2017, Connor had maintained her innocence.

She claimed a fight broke out between Taylor and the Sudarsa her handbag went missing.

While she admitted to destroying the police officers' ID and bloodied clothes, she denied playing a role in his death.

"I believe in the truth, which I have said to the police and in court from the beginning," she said, ABC News reported.

"I have never denied being there, but I swear I have never harmed the victim."

Taylor admitted to bashing Sudarsa but argued in court that he was acting in self-defence.

He was sentenced to six years imprisonment.
