A Canadian supermarket customer has been left shocked and disgusted after seeing a worker use his spit to clean shopping baskets.

Marta Casimiro told CityNews she went into the FreshCo store on Sunday when she saw the worker spit into a white towel before wiping it on baskets used by customers to hold groceries.

"I couldn't believe that. I was in shock... I feel sick," she told the news outlet.

She said she talked to the manager the next day about the incident but was subjected to "very bad customer service".

"The [manager] protected his worker. He said he didn't want to see the video. He didn't believe me and he treated us very badly."

Casimiro, who caught the incident on camera, said the act was "unacceptable" - especially in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We cannot allow such things to be overlooked. I'm furious and very disappointed," she says. "We are living in a pandemic... how do you think we feel? This is terrorism for me."

The communications manager Jacquelin Weatherbee told CityNews the cleaner is not an employee of FreshCo, but works for a third-party service provider and confirmed he is no longer working at the store.

She said his behaviour was "absolutely reprehensible".

"It is completely against the standards we work so hard to achieve in our stores each day.

"The health and safety of our customers and teammates is our top priority – that has never been more true than right now, through the COVID-19 pandemic."

She said they had launched an investigation and hopes "justice will be done".
