COVID-19: Identity of 'Bunnings Karen' revealed, calls police on journalists

A Melbourne woman who launched separate attacks on Bunnings Warehouse and Australia Post staff over mandatory mask-wearing has called police on journalists who tried to approach her for comment.

The woman, whose identity has been revealed as Kerry Nash, threatened to sue hardware giant Bunnings, saying they were "discriminating" against her for asking her to wear a mask. Face masks are currently mandatory for Melbourne residents or risk a NZ$215 fine, due to a massive spike in COVID-19 cases.

She then launched a tirade against Australia Post at one of its Melbourne depots. Videos of her anti-mask rants and posted on social media, where she abuses staff in both and tells them she doesn't need one, went viral and caused outrage among Australians, who dubbed her "the Bunnings Karen".

After her identity was revealed, Nash said she's "being attacked online" and called the police when journalists went to her Melbourne home.

"She's quite upset," a police officer at the scene told 7 News.

"She feels like she's being attacked online and everything."

On Sunday, Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews slammed "selfish" people for not wearing masks. The state recorded 532 new COVID-19 cases on Monday - the highest number of new coronavirus cases it's recorded in a single day.
