The Australian state of Victoria has recorded 374 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday and three additional coronavirus-related deaths, Premier Daniel Andrews says.

It follows the state reporting 273 new cases on Monday.

Tuesday's increase brings Victoria's total number of cases to 6289. There are 147 people in the hospital and 36 in intensive care.

Those who died overnight were three women - in their 100s, 90s, and 80s, Andrews told a news briefing on Tuesday. It brings the state's death toll to 42.

Andrews said 29,464 tests were completed in the past 24 hours.

Melbourne and surrounding Mitchell Shire are in its third week of a six-week lockdown but there have been calls for even tougher restrictions after alarming spikes have continued. At the weekend, Victoria reported 580 new cases after a record increase of 428 on Friday.

Residents throughout Melbourne are being told to wear masks. It will become mandatory from Wednesday night and face a fine for non-compliance.

"It's always challenging to analyse any one day's results," said Andrews, addressing Tuesday's increase.

"You'd like to see numbers coming down. At the end of the day, though, we're not seeing the doubling and doubling again so what that says to me - is the sorts of measures we've put in place are having a direct impact."

Neighbouring New South Wales recorded 13 new cases overnight - 10 of which were linked to a restaurant cluster in Sydney.
