A disabled dog which was abandoned twice in one day in a "heartbreaking" video which sparked a police investigation has been adopted.

CCTV footage captured the moment Tintin was pushed out of a car by his owner in Sao Leopoldo, Brazil in January.

Tintin, who only has three legs and has a disability with his remaining front leg, can be seen hobbling after the car as his owner drives away.

The Mirror reported Tintin was found by a local a few hours later who brought him back to his owners, believing he had gotten lost.

But the woman's husband dumped Tintin again the same day.

The mixed-breed dog was taken in by the Patas Guerreras animal shelter who said the dog did "exceptionally well" given the circumstances.

The video of Tintin's abandonment was shared hundreds of times on social media, sparking petitions and "mobilizing hundreds of candidates" to consider adopting rescue animals, Revista News says.

Commenters on social media called the woman "the most evil person on the planet".

"This is heartbreaking," another said.

"There better be a special place in hell for this lady."

More than 30 families ended up applying to adopt Tintin but the Secretary of Animal Protection, Anderson Ribeiro, said finding a new owner wasn't easy.

"The process involves a whole judicial issue due to abandonment, as well as a dispute by the former guardian and all the popular repercussions of the case, including on an international scale.

"It was a procedure that demanded extreme attention. Due to the pet's physical characteristics, we added some questions to the standard adoption questionnaire, especially regarding the floor of the adopter's home, " Ribeiro said, the Revista News reported.

After the "rigorous" interview process four families were selected as suitable before it was narrowed down to one living in Porto Alegre.

Patas Guerreras said the new family is showering him with "love and care".
