Donald and Ivanka Trump accused of 'violating' ethical boundaries with Goya tweets

Donald Trump and his daughter White House advisor Ivanka have been slammed online for making promotional posts on Twitter which may violate ethics rules.

On Wednesday Ivanka posted a photo of herself with a can of Goya Foods beans and their slogan "If it's Goya, it has to be good," in both English and Spanish.

The US President also tweeted that the company is "doing GREAT".

"The Radical Left smear machine backfired, people are buying like crazy!"

The same day, Trump also posted a photo on Instagram that showed him giving two thumbs up while seated behind a row of Goya Foods products.

Only last Friday, the company's chief executive Robert Unanue publicly declared his support for the Trump administration.

"We're all truly blessed at the same time to have a leader like President Trump, who is a builder," Unanue said at an event, the Washington Post reported.

"We pray for our leadership, our president, and we pray for our country that we will continue to prosper and to grow."

While it is not known if the posts were sponsored, social media users have slammed the high profile pair and are calling for a boycott of the company.

"This is an official campaign by the Trump administration to support Goya, making it all the more clear that Ivanka's tweet was a violation of the misuse of position regulations," Walter Shaub, the former director of the Office of Government Ethics tweeted.

"The administration is pushing Goya in exchange for the endorsement the company's CEO gave Trump. Whether or not expressly coordinated, Ivanka's tweet is a part of that effort. It's an ethics violation."

Shaub said that because Ivanka often uses her Twitter account to conduct official business and includes her job description in her profile, her tweet "is clearly a violation of the government's misuse of position regulation".

But in a statement White House spokeswoman Carolina Hurley said Ivanka has "every right" to promote the business and "express her personal support".

"Only the media and the cancel culture movement would criticize Ivanka for showing her personal support for a company that has been unfairly mocked, boycotted and ridiculed for supporting this administration – one that has consistently fought for and delivered for the Hispanic community."
