One new case of COVID-19 has been caught at Fiji's border, the Government confirmed on Monday.

The man, 66, tested positive for coronavirus on Saturday (local time) after returning from India on Wednesday.

He was held in quarantine before being taken to Nadi Hospital with his son who is still awaiting his results.

The pair returned to Fiji on a repatriation flight with 107 other passengers who are all in quarantine and awaiting their results.

The Acting Permanent Secretary for Health Dr James Fong said the case does not pose a risk to the community because it was caught at the border.

"We have been well prepared for the likelihood of COVID-19 cases developing amongst these repatriated citizens," Dr Fong said, as reported by RNZ.

"But as we've made clear, Fiji has the infrastructure, surveillance capabilities, and local testing capacities to ensure that these quarantine cases at the border present zero risk to the general public."

Fiji has only had 19 cases of COVID-19, 18 of which are recovered. No one has died from coronavirus in the island nation.
