Madeleine McCann: Neighbours claim suspect lived at second allotment with hidden cellar

A second German allotment rented by the main suspect in the Madeleine McCann case could also be hiding a secret cellar, neighbours have told British media.

The investigation into the British girl's 2007 disappearance has ramped up over the last two months after authorities identified a German man, Christian B, as a suspect in the case. He is currently in prison on unrelated sex crimes.

Several German locations have recently been searched including an allotment in Hanover rented by the suspect, where authorities discovered a hidden cellar on Thursday.

It's now being reported by several British media outlets that a second allotment - located in Braunschweig, near Hanover - could soon be under scrutiny, with its neighbours saying Christian B also built a cellar there.

The Mirror says a neighbour claimed the suspect dug a hole at the bottom of the house measuring 3 metres deep and 6 metres wide. It took him two months to complete while he spent time there between August 2013 and April 2016.

"He carried out the rocks and earth by hand and dumped it out by the front of the house. He put planks of wood over the top of the hole."

The media outlet says the woman who took over the site from Christian B has asked the police to search the property as she was having nightmares that a body could be hidden under the house.

The Sun visited the Braunschweig site and spoke to the local gardening association head, Juergen Kruimstoh.

"I was shocked when I suddenly saw his picture while searching for Maddie in the spring. His departure from here in 2016 was strange."

Kruimstoh said Christian B suddenly packed up and never heard from him again.

"Naturally there is a good deal of speculation about whether the police want to dig here like they have been doing in Hanover."

It's reported that local prosecutors won't comment on whether it would be searched like the Hanover allotment.

While the two allotments are located reasonably close to each other - Google says it takes roughly 50 minutes to travel between the cities - it's believed Christian B spent time at the Hanover site in 2007, the year McCann went missing from Praia da Luz, Portugal.

The man has also reportedly been linked to other missing child cases.

British authorities continue to treat McCann's disappearance as a missing persons case, but German authorities suspect she is dead.
