Beirut explosion: Scott Morrison confirms one Australian killed, 10 Kiwis in the city

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says one Australian has died in the Beirut explosion, which has killed 78 people so far.

Morrison told The Today Show his hearts go out to the 20,000 Australians in Lebanon involved in this 'horrific blast'.

"It's my deep regret to inform you one Australian has been killed in this horrific blast," he said. "We obviously can't confirm details of that at this stage but our hearts go out to all of those in Lebanon."

The death toll of the explosion has risen to 78, with over 4000 people wounded.

Morrison said in a tweet Australia is ready to provide support for the tragedy, including to any Australians affected.

There are currently 21 New Zealanders registered on SafeTravel as being in Lebanon and 10 registered as being in Beirut.

A message has been sent out to all New Zealanders registered in Lebanon advising them to stay away from the affected area and to follow the instructions of local authorities, according to The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

"We have not received any requests for consular assistance to date and have no information to suggest that New Zealanders have been affected at this stage," a spokesperson said.

The New Zealand Embassy is continuing to monitor the situation closely.
