US President Donald Trump is demanding drug testing for himself and democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden ahead of presidential debates scheduled to begin on September 29.

Trump's call for testing came after he accused Biden of taking drugs to enhance his performance at his final primary debate against Bernie Sanders.

Trump told the Washington Examiner Biden was "incoherent" In debates leading up to the one with Sanders and couldn't believe he could all of a sudden perform well.

"I don't know how he could have been so incompetent in his debate performances and then all of a sudden be ok against Bernie," Trump said on Tuesday (local time).

"If you go back and watch some of those numerous debates, he was so bad, he wasn't even coherent. And against Bernie he was."

"I'm asking for a drug test," Trump said, "Both candidates. Me, too. I take an aspirin a day,"

Trump said he didn't believe he would be allowed to enforce the drug tests but is adamant it should happen.

Trump's claims against Biden are based entirely on his observation, he said. Biden has not responded to Trump's accusations.

Biden took part in 11 debates all in front of large audiences, his final one against Sanders was without an audience or excessive media due to COVID-19.

It's not the first time Trump has accused his competitors of drug-taking. In 2016 he accused Hillary Clinton of using drugs to better her performance in their second presidential debate.
