Thousands of people have gathered to party at a water park in Wuhan after months with no new cases of COVID-19.

The city in China was the original epicentre of the virus which has now gone on to infect 21 million people and kill 777,000 around the world.

But after a strict 76-day lockdown in which people could not leave their communities, transport and highways were blocked, and businesses shut down, Wuhan is returning to normalcy.

Over the weekend thousands packed in at the Maya Beach Water Park for an electronic music festival, CNN reported.

"Partygoers in swimsuits bunched together shoulder to shoulder, waving to the beat of the music while cooling down in hip-high water; others relaxed on inflatable rubber tubes that packed the pool to the brim, with little space to float around."

The water park reopened in late July and has been particularly busy since offering half-price discounts, Hubei Daily reported.

Currently, the water park receives an average of 15,000 daily visitors during weekends.
