US President Donald Trump removed from press conference after shots fired outside White House

US President Donald Trump has been removed from a press conference by Secret Service agents following a shooting outside the White House.

In footage from his press conference, the President can be seen being abruptly whisked away mid-sentence by agents, one of whom can be heard saying "shots fired outside".

The interruption came just minutes after he'd started speaking.

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought were also taken out of the briefing room while the doors were locked, according to Reuters.

Fox News reports that a shooting took place at the corner of 17th Street NW and Pennsylvania Street NW, just outside the White House's front gate.

The Secret Service had cleared journalists off the the front lawn in the immediate aftermath of the incident, CBS correspondent Skyler Henry says.

Trump has since returned to the conference, telling reporters it appears "there was a shooting outside the White House" that now "seems very much under control".

He said a person has been taken to the hospital after being shot by the Secret Service, but hadn't been told of their condition.

Asked if he felt rattled, Trump told media "the world has been a dangerous place" but that he felt safe with his agents, who he described as "fantastic people".

"There were a lot of terrific people, ready to go," he said.

"I'd like to thank the Secret Service for doing their always quick and very effective work. There was an actual shooting and somebody has been taken to the hospital."

The President said he was taken to his Oval Office after being escorted out of the briefing room.
