Both parents of a teenager in the US state of Georgia have died suffering COVID-19 within four days of each other after all three tested positive for the virus.

Justin Hunter, 17, and parents Eugene and Angie received positive results two weeks ago, but Justin stayed asymptomatic.

Eugene and Angie, however, both developed a temperature, headache and cough.

"They became very sick and they had the clear symptoms,'' Justin told WSB-TV.

The pair were taken to hospital where Eugene died on July 26, before Angie died on July 30.

Justin believed his family had taken all necessary precautions to avoid the virus and said he did not know how they caught COVID-19.

"My mom, when she would go to the store, she would be wearing a mask, she would be wearing gloves," Justin said.

Now he wants others to wear masks, saying: "If you don't wear it for yourself, wear it for the next person, because you could be saving that person's life."

A GoFundMe page has been set up to support the teen, who is now living with extended family. The page has raised US$325,714 (NZ$492,774) since its establishment three days ago.

"This will help provide basic life needs and enable him to pursue his education; dreams and aspirations."

Justin, who plays American football at his school, says he will devote his senior season to his deceased parents.
