Woman pinned down by police, arrested for refusing to wear a mask in Melbourne

A woman was dramatically arrested in Melbourne for ignoring the city's face mask regulations on Saturday.

Police say the woman and her daughter refused to give their names and explain why they weren't wearing masks, which are mandatory under Victoria's current COVID-19 restrictions.

Video of the dramatic arrest, released on Thursday, shows police pinning the woman down as one officer says, "you need to take this seriously".

Victoria established mandatory mask-wearing for Melbourne late last month due to its COVID-19 crisis, which has since been extended to the entire state.

A Victoria police spokesperson told 7 News officers made "numerous attempts" to ask the women their details and why they weren't wearing masks.

They were fined NZ$1787 each.

Victoria reported 471 new cases of coronavirus on Thursday after recording its highest daily number of confirmed infections - 725 - on Wednesday.

All non-essential businesses in Melbourne were ordered to close for at least six weeks from Thursday in an effort to take back control of its COVID-19 outbreak.
