A man was sent hurling to the ground after climbing onto a California Highway Patrol car during a protest against President Donald Trump.

A video posted on Twitter on Monday shows a man climbing on the hood of the CHP patrol car. The officer continued to drive forward - knocking the protester on the street.

The video was taken outside California's Sacramento Airport, where Trump met with state officials for a wildfire briefing.

Trump's brief visit to the state brought out crowds of protesters demanding action against climate change as firefighters continued to battle wildfires across the state.

The CHP vehicle continued to drive forward, flinging a man from the top of the vehicle and knocking another man off the side.

"That is unacceptable behavior by CHP. Their job, when a protester got on the hood of the patrol car, would have been to shut off the vehicle, exit the car, and deal with the unsafe conditions," a Twitter user commented.

"Pretty nuts that they couldn't park it and get out and remove the guy. But instead they just floor it knowing he'll be thrown and injured. They're not protecting anyone," another wrote.

At least two people had been injured and one was taken to hospital, according to NBC news.
