COVID-19: Australian woman fined $1800 for driving 'to buy a kebab' during lockdown

Infringement notices were issued to 171 people in Victoria overnight for breaching the state's lockdown rules.

One woman was caught driving after curfew in the early hours on Tuesday. Police found the woman had travelled 75km from the city of Geelong to Melbourne "to buy a kebab", 7 News reports. She was fined AU$1652 (NZ$1800).

A 9pm to 6am curfew is in place under Melbourne's current COVID-19 stage 4 restrictions.

Two others issued infringement notices overnight - two women - were found in public "eating ice cream" at 2am.

On Sunday, Premier Daniel Andrews announced Victoria's lockdown, originally meant to end September 13, would be extended for another two weeks.

"If we go too far too soon, the modelling also tells us we'd be on track for a third wave by mid-November," Andrews said in a statement.

"We all want this to be over - but for this to be over, we each have to find it in ourselves to keep going just a little bit longer.

"We've all come too far, given too much, to see it wasted."

Victoria Police Minister Lisa Neville said on Wednesday officers were still seeing examples of people putting others at risk.

"The majority of Victorians are doing the right thing," she said.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Victoria had 19,629 cases of COVID-19 after 55 new infections were reported on Tuesday.
