Instagram is experiencing international technical issues with users unable to refresh their feeds on Friday morning.

The website appeared to load as normal but when users tried to add new pictures, a "couldn't refresh feed" error appeared.

Tracking website Down Detector reported the issues were widespread with most complaints coming from the United Kingdom and the eastern United States.

By 6am 72,000 people had reported problems in the UK, and over 800 in New Zealand.

Of the Instagram user reports on DownDetector, 75 percent were about problems accessing news feed, 15 percent related to issues accessing the website and 0 percent were about problems logging in.

Netblocks, which also tracks outages, said they had recorded outages in multiple countries.

"Social media platforms Instagram and Facebook are back online following an international outage registered in multiple countries; incident duration 25 minutes."

They said by 6:45am the platforms were back online, but users in New Zealand are still experiencing issues.

Instagram hasn't commented on the issues so far.
