US Election: Political commentators call Donald Trump, Joe Biden presidential debate 'the worst', 'a disaster'

Political commentators have given scathing reviews following the first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden.

The Republican and Democratic candidates were trying to win over voters ahead of the US election, which is only 35 days away on November 3.

Here's a round-up of post-debate analysis.

'The single worst debate I have ever covered'

CNN editor-at-large Chris Cillizza said the debate was "horrendous".

"This was an absolutely awful debate that did absolutely nothing to educate the public about the two candidates and what they would do if given four years to serve as president of the United States," he wrote in an analysis piece.

"It was, without question, the single worst debate I have ever covered in my two decades of doing this job."

He added that since over 200,000 Americans have died from COVID-19 so far, it made the unseriousness of the debate "all the more striking".

"It was, simply put, a deep disservice to democracy."

'A shitshow'

CNN correspondent Dana Bash summed up the debate succinctly as "a shitshow".

"That really is the phrase that I'm getting from people on both sides of the aisle. It's the only phrase I can think of to really describe it."

CNN anchor Jake Tapper said the debate was "a hot mess, inside a dumpster fire, inside a train wreck".

"That was the worst debate I have ever seen. It wasn't even a debate. It was a disgrace. And it's primarily because of President Trump."

'A disaster'

New York Times journalists have called the debate "a disaster" and "a brawl".

National security correspondent David Sanger said debate moderator Chris Wallace struggled to keep control of Trump and Biden.

"It started out as a debate, and ended up as a brawl. True, we saw two radically different views of how to govern the country. But we didn't get too much substance between all the cross-talk, name-calling and interruptions," he wrote.

"And at the end - the discussion on voter integrity - the President raised a series of false claims about mail-in ballots that will feed conspiracy theories for days."

Political reporter Lisa Lerer said the debate "was a disaster".

"And [it was] probably not all that great for democracy, given all the fear mongering around the election and voting."

'This sort of debate should not happen in a democracy'

MSNBC correspondents Rachel Maddow, Joy Reid and Nicolle Wallace gave blistering reviews of the first debate.

"Chris Wallace did not act as a moderator. Trump did not act like a debater. Donald Trump was the abuser and Chris Wallace was among the abused," Wallace said.

"I've participated in debate [rule] negotiations. There are rules, Donald Trump didn't follow them and the debate moderator didn't hold his feet to the fire."

She added it was a "mess" because of Trump's "desperate need for oxygen of air time".

Reid said Trump acted like "an angry autocrat who's desperate to hang on to power".

"He's mad. And he does not understand why he has to even sit for a debate or sit for an election."

Maddow said "this sort of debate should not happen in a democracy".

"What happened on that debate stage was unlike anything that has ever happened on a presidential debate stage ever before," she said.

"There's something beyond fact-checking that needs to happen here [for this debate]."
