A couple in Wuhan has been crushed to death while watching a theatre performance put on for medical staff.

The Wuchang Government Affairs confirmed the incident on Weibo on Thursday, The Beijing News reported.

The couple had been watching a performance of the Han Show at the Hanxiu Theatre on September 6.

While getting up their son slipped underneath the seats and his parents tried to rescue him.

But the seats move during the performance, opening and closing like a fan, a staff member told The Beijing News.

The parents were crushed under the seats and later died.

The boy, however, survived as he had fallen onto a safety net underneath.

Wuhan officials confirmed an investigation was underway into the deaths and the theatre had reached a compensation agreement with the couple's family, The Mirror reported.

They also said the theatre owner company Wanda Group has fired two of its employees.
