A group of teenage girls in Australia are ready to hit the road, thanks to a class teaching them regular car maintenance as a vital life skill.

Year 11 students at Sydney's Stella Maris College were taught how to change a tyre, how to check the air pressure in them, and how best to monitor oil and coolant levels. The girls also learnt what to do if they were in a car accident, thanks to the women at Galmatic - an organisation which helps young women and teenagers feel comfortable behind the wheel.

Eleni Mitakos, who has run Galmatic for the past 13 years, told The Daily Mail her organisation is not just for women.

"We teach up to 100,000 teenagers a year in schools, across all parts of Sydney.

"The primary aim is for teenagers to feel comfortable behind the wheel. Ultimately they are driving very big vehicles which can be very expensive if not looked after properly."

Comments on the school's Facebook page showed huge support for the initiative, with women saying they wished they had been taught the same skills.

"Can you do a session for mums?" one woman wrote.

"This is really smart! This should be taught everywhere! Brilliant!," said another.
